The Gilded Lily

Hello! I’m Lily, a Content Creature here at freeflow. Despite my name, I’m actually allergic to lilies!
A true-blue Singaporean, though I’ve spent most of my life in Shanghai; I returned to Singapore before the pandemic and took some time to re-assimilate into Singaporean culture after my long absence.
Raised in a family of artists, I’ve always found that art is the outlet where I can best creatively express myself. Though I pursued Graphic Design Communication at Chelsea College of the Arts in London, my aesthetic tastes were actually influenced by a mishmash of cultures. I was incredibly drawn to the craft, history and vibrancy of the multicultural arts scene both when I was living in Shanghai and while studying in London.
My generation grew up on a steady diet of TV and YouTube. We consume content voraciously and churn it out just as quick. Whether it’s a social media ‘story’, a keenly edited photo or trendy TikTok video; they are all part of our daily lives and our digital tale. Slowly, but surely, I found myself drifting towards the film industry.
The aesthetic of classic Hollywood captivated me from my early teenage years and I gradually grew invested in the art of filmmaking, where previously I dabbled only in photography. Through studying design and media, as well as making little videos on family trips; I practiced to become a filmmaker.
A major milestone in this journey came by chance. While scouting for stories of multiculturalism to document on film; I happened across a traditional “chip shop” in London, decked out in hot pink, and oddly also serving up Chinese dishes. Intrigued, I approached and fell into deep conversation with the Chinese immigrant family that owned the place.
Their story of assimilating into South London culture, of ‘fitting in by standing out’, their graciousness and their openness touched me, and I found that the experience encapsulated why I love filmmaking: the sharing of experience and stories through visual art and storytelling.
freeflow, for me, is the perfect environment to collaborate with like-minded creatives and craft moving content. I’ve also found my graphic design experience useful when communicating visual ideas, like through the crafting of video treatments. Even though some of these ideas never manifest in daylight or on screens, it is the creative process behind them that I find most rewarding and valuable.
